So the report from the placenta came back and the twins are identical. That isn't the best word, because identical makes people assume, no differences at all. They are monozygotic, one zygote that split into two. So they have the same DNA. But, lots of factors affect what genes can be expressed. Even their placement in the womb and their birth, made for different shaped heads. That is the main way to tell them apart. It may even out over time, it may not. I don't know. But they have the same eyes, nose and lips, and their fingers and toes are the exact same and their hairlines folllow the same pattern. I can't distinguish between their cries, they have the same voice.
It will be interesting to watch them grow and develop and see all those similarities and differences. I'm not totally a fan of the word identical, it just doesn't describe these two little individuals that well. And monozygotic sounds a little too scientific. We'll just call them Lochlan and Ewan.
Very cool! I like your comment: "We'll just call them Lochlan and Ewan."
ReplyDeleteJust as an aside, if you are ever shopping in a Gymboree, they have 'lines' of clothes with tons of different pieces that coordinate but aren't exactly the same. If you look at my kids Easter picture, my boys both have shirts on from the same line. They match really well without being the same. I was thinking the other day that twins would look so cute dressed in Gymboree! They could match without 'matching' if you know what I mean!
